Reigning champion Felix Rosenqvist makes Macau GP return to defend title with SJM Theodore Racing by Prema
(Macau, 25 October 2016) SJM Theodore Racing by Prema will defend its Macau Grand Prix title this year with a three-car assault led by reigning champion Felix Rosenqvist.
The team will attempt to win a record ninth Macau GP title with double winner Rosenqvist, who achieved his second consecutive victory last year with SJM Theodore Racing by Prema.
Rosenqvist will be joined at the 63rd Macau Grand Prix by teammates Nick Cassidy, the 2015 Japanese Formula 3 champion and Maximilian Gunther, vice-champion in this year’s European F3 Championship.
Rosenqvist, who is also the 2015 European F3 Champion and supported by Mercedes-Benz, hopes to make Macau GP history with the team by becoming the first driver to not only win the race three times but also consecutively. The Swedish driver has been in high demand following an outstanding 2015 season which has seen him graduate to America’s leading junior single-seater championship Indy Lights as well as DTM and Formula E. “Just saying the words ‘Macau’ and ‘Formula 3’ brings a smile to my face, so I’m absolutely thrilled to be racing there once again this year,” says Felix Rosenqvist. “It’s the one race in the world that has had the greatest impact on me and my career, and when the prospect of doing it again with SJM Theodore Racing by Prema came up, it was simply too tempting an opportunity. I really can’t wait to get back out on track in Macau and experiencing that driving sensation again; you can’t get it anywhere else.”
Cassidy, a factory Lexus driver in Super GT this year, recorded a podium finish on his Macau GP debut in 2014 before going on to win last year’s Japanese F3 Championship in his maiden year. The 22-year-old has been kept busy this year where, alongside competing in Super GT, he finished fourth in the European F3 Championship. The New Zealander is no stranger to the Guia circuit and this year marks his third attempt at winning the Macau GP. A race-winner already this year in the European championship, Cassidy is hungry to claim his maiden Macau GP victory by capitalizing on his experience. Nick commented, “I am really pleased and honoured to be joining SJM Theodore Racing by Prema for the Macau Grand Prix in 2016. I had a great run at Macau in my rookie year, so am excited but prepared for the challenge that lies ahead.”
Gunther, who makes his Macau GP debut this year, has the second highest number of race wins in this year’s European F3 Championship with four victories. The German racer, who is also backed by Mercedes-Benz, is relishing the opportunity to drive around the Guia street circuit. “To be racing at this year’s Macau GP together with SJM Theodore Racing by Prema makes me very proud” added Max. “The team has a great history with lots of success, therefore it will be even more special for me to jump into the car for the first time at this legendary street circuit.”
Commenting on SJM Theodore Racing by Prema's 2016 Macau Grand Prix entry (FIA F3 World Cup), Teddy Yip Jr., said “Our partnership with Prema strengthens year-on-year and a record ninth Macau GP victory would certainly be a fantastic way to round off a spectacular year. Taking the Teams’ title in GP2 and F4 plus winning both the Teams’ and Drivers’ Championship in F3 marks an unforgettable season, and it’s not over yet!”
As always, we look to establish the strongest driver line-up for the Macau GP and I’m delighted to have reigning champion Felix Rosenqvist back on the team. Felix may have graduated from F3 but he is hungry for a hat-trick of Macau GP victories which will definitely give him an edge. Both Maxi and Nick have been incredibly impressive in our FIA European F3 cars this year, finishing second and fourth in the championship and they certainly deserve the opportunity to impress in Macau.”
